Vespa News...

Chris' stolen scooter, was lifted on Saturday night (3rd May) from his back yard in Northampton. Not a rich man, it will be years before he can buy this scooter again.

It is a 1966 Vespa VBB which is painted Burgundy and was imported from Thailand earlier this year. It has several distinguishing features. Late 1950s ACMA handlebars and headset, PX200EFL engine. The kickstart, gear selector, carb case and flywheel cover are all powder coated white. It has separate seats rather than a traditional one piece seat. The frame has a hole cut for a PXEFL autolube, the hole is too small for a regular grommit and has a makeshift one in place with a penny filling the hole. The rear brake pedal does not have the retaining pin and this has led to the brake switch smashing. As a result of this the lights and horn do not work as they require the earth on the switch to be grounded. If the thieves have the lights working the headlight is yellow.

Chris will be able to identify parts if the scooter has been stripped.

There is a reward for its return.

Please call Chris on 07999 574998 or use cjwhite123@hotmail.com or chris.white@uk.tesco.com

Elements

I got my mitts on a promo copy of the new single by The Elements this week, thanks to Rich at Acid Jazz Records. As we said in our article about the launch party last week, it's called Caught In A Storm, and was written by Elements frontman and occasional OCS member Andy Bennett. I spoke to a couple of people who were at the launch and they were suitably impressed.

Fans of revival bands like The Chords and Small World, as well as Solarflares and of course OCS, will love this record. Crunching power chords and thundering drum rolls herald an energetic intro into a surprisingly melodious vocal harmony that's so smooth it almost puts you in mind of Simon and Garfunkel or The Beatles. Judging by the amount of copy the vocals are getting in write-ups, the lads are very proud of them and rightly so.

Also apparent is the influence of recent OCS material that Bennett's been involved with, such as that from On The Leyline. This is an infectious A-side that will get feet tapping and heads nodding at any rally or scooter club do this year, provided the DJ discerning enough to have it in his CD box that is!

Al Wilson, 19 Jun 1939 - 21 Apr 2008

al wilson

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Soul singer Al Wilson, who topped the US pop singles chart in 1974 with "Show and Tell," died on Monday, local media reported.

Wilson succumbed to kidney failure in a hospital in Fontana, a city about 50 miles east of Los Angeles, said the Inland Valley Daily Bulletin. He was 68.

The Mississippi native issued his first single "The Snake," which reached No. 27 in the US charts, in 1968. "Show and Tell" spent one week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hit 100 singles chart in January 1974. The romantic ballad was written and produced by prolific songwriter Jerry Fuller, and first recorded by Johnny Mathis.

Whilst Wilson's records have been a regular feature on the Northern Soul circuit for many years, "The Snake" enjoyed a recent resurgence in general popularity thanks to being featured in a UK TV commercial.

PLAYBOX THEATRE COMPLETE MUSIC FOCUS TRILOGY WITH
CLASSIC 1960S ALBUM FOR 2008 OXJAM EVENT

OGDENS’ NUT GONE FLAKE BY THE SMALL FACES STAGED AS NEW
MUSIC-THEATRE PRODUCTION

Small Fakers

Playbox Theatre in 2006 staged a new production of Michael Pinchbeck’s surreal play The White Album based on events in, around and inspired by the 1968 Beatles album. It was a huge success in both the UK and USA where it played the famous Santa Monica Playhouse.

Playbox Theatre is determined to affect young peoples' lives and aspirations. Each year the company partners Oxfam’s Oxjam Music Festival to raise funds for children worldwide in distress, poverty and dire conditions. An unusual live stage event based on classic and inspirational albums has been the plan for 2006-2008 with The White Album, being followed by Pink Floyd’s The Wall with live band Breathe and over 40 young people recreating the epoch’s most revered concept album in a two-hour stage show.

To complete this trilogy of works in 2008 and to take a different direction, Playbox Theatre will stage Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake – The Small Faces 1968 concept album – as a show for all the family telling of Happiness Stan and his quest to discover the missing half of the moon. With live music from The Small Fakers – the UK’s only facsimile Small Faces band, actors, dancers, movement animations and puppeteers from Playbox and a guest narrator (tba) – the event promises to be unique and it is hoped to raise a substantial amount for Oxjam from the show. Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake will premiere on Thursday 20th November with subsequent performances Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd November at The Dream Factory, Warwick.

Director will be Stewart McGill, director of The White Album and The Wall. Production consultants are John Hellier editor of The Small Faces website Darlings of Whapping Wharf and Mark Cunningham editor of Total Production International who will provide essential production and biographical support to the creative team.

The Small Fakers (www.smallfakers.co.uk) will play Ogden’s album live each night with an extra set featuring hits of The Small Faces including Itchycoo Park, Tin Soldier, All Or Nothing etc.

In addition each performance will feature a local rising band in support (tba).

Playbox Theatre begin development of the new production immediately and further information will be available shortly.

Kerim: "They always follow my car when it goes to the airport."
Bond: "Was it a Vespa or a Lambretta?"
Kerim: "You noticed? A Lambretta. They have a whole fleet of them for their little men, the men I call "The Faceless Ones". They look so alike, we have never managed to sort them out."
