CARLO LITTLE 17th December 1938 - 6th August 2005

Born Carl O'Neill in Sudbury, Middlesex, Carlo Little was one of the most inspirational rock'n'roll drummers in British, and arguably world, music history.  Famous not only for being the drummer with The Savages, the band fronted by David 'Screaming Lord' Sutch in the early sixties, he was also the man who gave a certain 15 year-old Keith Moon his first drumming lessons.  Indeed it was from Little that Moon learned how to bang a bass drum so hard that it gained new definition as a musical instrument.  To learn more about the amazing life of Carlo Little, please visit his official website at and I can recommend browsing the guestbook to see the many messages of condolence at Aug 2005

JOHN WILLIAM "LONG JOHN" BALDRY - January 12, 1941 - July 21, 2005
British blues legend Long John Baldry died in Vancouver recently after fighting a long illness.  Nicknamed 'Long John' because of his 6'7" height, he is credited to have been one of the main forces in British Blues, Rock & Pop music in the 1960's. Long John performed and recorded with many of Rock n' Rolls most famous artists. .Rod Stewart gave the following testimonial:
"I was 18 and playing harmonica and singing a Muddy Waters song in a railway station, when Long John Baldry ran over to me from the other side of the tracks. I had just been to see him play at a club; he was one of the top Bluesmen in England. But John didn’t sing Muddy Waters songs – he knew Muddy Waters, had performed with him and with Ramblin' Jack Elliott too. And now he was asking, 'Would you like to join the band?'

"For me, just shaking his hand – knowing all the great musicians whose hand he’d shaken before – was mind-blowing. But so was John. Picture this elegant man with a proper English accent, never without a tie, a towering six-foot-seven. I was a huge fan and I was intimidated by his offer. Rod Stewart wasn’t in demand in those days; no one was interested. I immediately said yes. John had a knack for discovering talent. Ginger Baker, Jeff Beck and Brian Jones all worked with him early on. Elton John played piano in one of his bands, other Rolling Stones too – Charlie, Ron Wood, and Keith. In 1962, when the Rolling Stones were just getting started, they opened for him in London. Eric Clapton has said many times that John was one of the musicians that inspired him to play the Blues. And for their internationally televised special in 1964, the Beatles invited John to perform his version of 'I Got My Mojo Working'.  In those days the only music we fell in love with was the Blues, and John was the first white guy singing it, in his wonderful voice. It was the true Blues and everyone looked up to him." Aug 2005

Ska Legend Laurel Aitken Dies
Laurel Aitken was born in 1927 in Cuba and moved to West Kingston, Jamaica in 1938. His music career began in the 40s, singing songs in the Nat King
Cole/Louis Jordan style of that time, he then cut his teeth on the sounds of R & B, soul, calypso, mento, and his personal love, boogie. Singing at the Glass Bucket Club and attending the roving sound systems provided him with stomping grounds to develop and hone his great talent for singing, dancing and generally attracting an audience. He cut several singles in the 50s, including 1957's "Roll, Jordan Roll". Laurel's big break came in a year
later with the release of the "Little Sheila" c/w "Boogie in my Bones" double A side, the first single ever released on a new label called Island Records, founded by Englishman Chris Blackwell. "Little Sheila" spent 11 weeks at #1 on the Jamaican charts, cementing his popularity with Jamaican music fans. Aitken emigrated to England in 1960 and changed the face of ska music forever. A label in Britain had been releasing bootlegs of unavailable Jamaican recordings to meet the new demands - and when Laurel arrived, he had stern words with the responsible parties. From that meeting, Melodic started a new label - Blue Beat - to cater for the Jamaican market. After several years with Melodic, Laurel moved on and recorded for EMI, Ska Beat, Nu Beat, Direct Records and Doctor Bird Records, amongst others. During this period, he cut classic tracks such as "Fire in Mi Wire," "Bartender," "Jesse James," "Landlord and Tenants," "It's Too Late" and "Pussy Price". Laurel was the only Jamaican star who regularly toured the UK and was very successful in doing so. During the 2-Tone era, Laurel played with The Beat, toured with Secret Affair (backed by the punk/reggae band The Ruts) and his career was rejuvenated with the new found popularity of ska in the UK. The classic "Rudi Got Married" was released during this period on I-Spy/Arista Records. After the demise of 2-Tone, Laurel kept his faith in ska music and recorded several albums and singles with the British ska band, The Potato 5 and even appeared in the Mod film "Absolute Beginners".

Subject: Fylde Borough Motorcycle/Scooter Meet - Monday Nights - St Annes Square

Dear Fellow 2 wheel enthusiast's
May I introduce myself.  My name is Councillor John Coombes and  I am the Leader of Fylde Borough Council, situated on the Fylde Coast between Preston and Blackpool.  As a committed biker I would like to start an Authority backed weekly motorcycle meet in the Town Centre of St annes.  St annes Square has undergone a massive investment which has improved parking and attracted many restaurants, pubs and cafe's to the centre of this little sea side resort.  What it needs now is some activity on a Monday night!  It is hoped that if this event becomes well supported we will be able to ask the many local traders to offer discounts on food and drink to visiting groups.
The run into Fylde whether from North, East or South has excellent road links combining Country Lanes, Dual Carriageways and Motorway (end of M55).  Once you are here you can take advantage of all the above, plus, the sea front, promenade and the excellent trip up the prom to either Lytham or Blackpool.
I feel that the NW Coast needs another regular meet that could enable the Council to promote to it's traders the event.  Many of you will have read about the Poole, Dorset, weekly event that regularly attracts over 1500 riders (MCN).  This hopefully will lead to motorcycle organisations and dealers coming along also to promote biking.  Now the crunch, I need as many of you to turn up on Monday the 20th June between 7pm and 9 pm and then every Monday.  The meeting place will be the town centre car parks (free of charge) on St Annes Road West/jnc of Orchard St, The Square, St Annes on Sea, Lancs, FY8.
It would be appreciated if you could forward this e-mail onto anyone whom you consider would be interested.  All types of bike would be welcome.  I shall also be asking for radio and press support to promote this meet.  Hopefully if enough turn up it will give me the proof that this could be a regular, well supported event.  Hope to see you next Monday the 20th.
